Engineering for Kids RVA summer camp programs are designed to bring science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), to kids ages 4 to 14. Engineering and technology is, after all, one of the fastest growing industries in the world!
Engineering for Kids® RVA students will:
- Engage in fun hands-on activities
- Build robots or skyscrapers, design games, launch rockets and more
- Explore the many opportunities available in S.T.E.M.
- Create, solve problems, and collaborate with new friends

LEGO® WeDo Robotics: Campers will use Lego® WeDo™ robotics kits and software to access an electronic instruction manual. With teacher guidance, students follow step-by-step instructions to locate and assemble each Lego component to create their robot model. This program is a perfect mixture of fun and learning, using LEGO® WeDo Robotics. The campers will build several models such as a hungry alligator, a flying bird, and a roaring lion.
Junior Engineering and Robotics: We have opened up this camp for a week of fun, creativity, and of course, engineering! Campers will invent new machines and explore creative design solutions using the engineering design process. Campers will also discover the many uses of motors and sensors as they learn about building and coding their own Lego® WeDo robot models. Discover how a wind-up toy works, design tools that aid in travel and program a robot for an airplane rescue as part of this engaging engineering experience.
Wings, Wheels, and Sails: Everyone has to travel, and engineers are involved in all the steps of designing different modes of transportation. During this camp yor child will discover the amazing process of inventing and designing tools that aid in travel. Everyone’s travel needs are different, weather they need to walk, ride or drive around their local community to do errands, or maybe they need to jet half way across the world by evening! In this camp they will engineer their own mode of transportation to reach many amazing destinations!
How Amusing Week: Engineering Sampler Ah, the thrill of an amusement park…zipping around on race cars, zooming through the loops of a rollercoaster and enjoying a cold, refreshing ice cream treat at the end of a hot, sticky day. Can’t get better than that! Students will divide into competitive theme park teams. They will challenge other teams in, mechanical engineering, and chemical engineering related contests with the goal of creating the most fantastic and thrilling theme park experience!
Hardware Engineering: Get Wired with MaKey MaKey: Imagine designing a piano using celery or bananas..... Now, envision playing video games using just your body, a bit of wire and your own imagination. In our hardware engineering program, students engineer their own customized video game controllers using a Makey Makey device and materials that can be found in just about any kitchen.
Jr. Scratch/Makey Makey™: Musical Adventures: Do you dance around and play the air drum solo? In Musical Adventures with Scratch and Makey Makey™, we are going to explore how different sounds are created and we will create our own interpretations of common musical instruments like drums, piano, guitar, and even a recorder, and we will create our very own dancing program, all through the use of Makey Makey™ and Scratch to bring our music to life!
LEGO® Robotics Mission to Mars During the LEGO® Robotics: Mission to Mars camp, students design and program robots to explore an unknown planet, find safe shelter, and collect soil samples from the planet. An out-of-this-world experience! Join us as we brainstorm, design, and build robots that simulate the rover Curiosity that is currently exploring Mars. Campers will use a variety of sensors this week to help their robots explore, test, and maneuver through new and unseen landscapes. Building and programming a robot that can carefully and accurately avoid dangers and gather data is essential to a successful journey!
Engineer Investigators: Become a forensics engineer and help to find out who stole the blueprints for his secret, new design. Using principles of investigative science and forensic engineering, students will analyze evidence in the simulated crime scene using math, science, and technology. Embark on a new journey each day to decipher cryptic clues and biological codes, and help us identify the thief through chemical and mechanical analysis. Time is running out, and with your help the crime will be solved!
Junior Chemical Engineering: introduces our youngest engineers to fundamental concepts of solids, liquids, and solutions. Students investigate the properties of several crazy concoctions and make their own samples of bubbles, play dough, flub, and more.
Junior Inventors’ Workshop: We have opened up the workshop for a day of fun, creativity, and of course engineering! Students will invent new machines and explore creative design solutions using the Engineering Design Process. Discover how a wind-up toy works and build and design your own robot during the Engineering For Kids Inventor’s Workshop.
NXT LEGO® Robo Battles: During the LEGO® Robo Battles camp students create, build, program, and control robots designed to perform many challenges. Such as the SumoBots Challenge, Jousting Challenge, and the Catapult Challenge. Are you up for a robotic challenge?
Travel into the Future with MinecraftEDU Explorations: Join us in an apocalyptic future, one where the earth has been ravaged by a series of natural disasters. Each day, students rely on the engineering design process to solve a series of challenges such as building a city on a series of islands, escaping from a bunker on Mt. Everest, and even building a rocket to land on the moon! Through application of engineering principles, students solve numerous challenges as they make their virtual world of Minecraft a safe place for humanity once again.
