Summer break is something every child looks forward to. It’s ultimately a time to relax and take a break from homework. But as parents, we also know that long breaks from learning can make it harder for children to jump back into the classroom when school starts back up again.
The good news is that keeping kids academically engaged over the summer doesn’t have to feel like they’re back in the classroom. In fact, the best learning often happens when children don’t even realize they’re doing it.
Here are a few ways families can keep curiosity alive all summer long:
Make Learning Feel Like Play
Children learn best when they’re having fun. Instead of worksheets and memorization, look for activities that encourage them to build, experiment, and explore.
Challenge your child to build the tallest tower they can with household items, design a marble maze, or create a bridge that can support a favorite toy. Even cooking together introduces science and math concepts in a way that feels natural and engaging.
When learning becomes play, children become curious and get excited to discover what’s possible.
Choose Projects Over Mindless Screen Time
Technology certainly has its value, but not all screen time is created equal.
In our own home, we try to make technology purposeful. Our son has an iPad that’s primarily used for school-related learning, and when it’s time for games, we encourage puzzle and strategy games that require critical thinking instead of passive entertainment.
The goal isn’t to eliminate screens. It’s to balance them with activities that encourage children to create, solve problems, and think independently.
Encourage Curiosity
One of the easiest ways to introduce STEM at home is by simply following your child’s interests.
If they ask how airplanes fly, look up the answer together. If they’re fascinated by insects, spend an afternoon observing bugs in the backyard. If they love building with blocks, challenge them to improve their designs. You can even encourage them to read articles on those topics as well.
You don’t have to know all the answers. Sometimes the best lesson is showing your child how to ask questions and explore possible solutions together, instead of Googling the answer.
Give Kids Opportunities to Learn With Others
Summer is also a great time for children to collaborate, make friends, and learn from one another.
Project-based learning gives kids the chance to share ideas and work through challenges as a team. Children need to build communication skills and confidence alongside STEM knowledge.
That’s exactly what we strive to create through our Engineering For Kids summer camps. Every camp is designed to be hands-on, engaging, and filled with opportunities for children to explore engineering, science, and technology while making new friends and having fun. Whether your child already loves STEM or is just beginning to discover it, summer camps provide an exciting environment where learning feels like an adventure instead of another day in the classroom.
Keep Their Gears Turning This Summer
Summer doesn’t have to be a choice between learning and having fun. The best experiences combine both.
Whether you’re building projects at home, exploring your community, asking questions, or enrolling your child in a hands-on STEM camp, every opportunity to stay curious helps prepare them for the school year ahead.
Most importantly, remember that you don’t have to be an engineer or scientist to inspire your child. All you have to do is encourage them to keep asking, “What if?”
That simple question can lead to a summer full of discovery and adventure.
