Friday Workshops | Fall 2020

Robotics 101

In the Robotics 101 workshop, students will learn the basics of designing, programming, and controlling a fully functional robot. Using LEGO® MINDSTORMS®, mathematical concepts, and engineering principles students will brainstorm, plan, test, and modify sequences of instructions to accomplish a given task. The students will learn to program the Robot to make basic shapes like Circle and Square in this workshop.

  • Date: September 18th
  • Time: 6pm-8pm
  • This program is mainly geared towards ages 7 – 12.

Jr. Robotics: We Do Wild Animals

Using LEGO® bricks and motors, children investigate the behaviors of wild animals as they build and program their creations to move. Students join the LEGO® story characters of Max and Mia and find themselves encountering various animals in their natural habitats. Using the WeDo® software, children will build and program dancing birds, and drumming monkey to move and make sounds. Through the use of open discussion, students discover how animals behave and interact with their environment. Everyone in this class will have a ROARING good time!

  • Date: September 25th
  • Time: 6pm-8pm
  • This program is mainly geared towards ages 5 – 12.

Jr. Mechanical – Let’s Make Toys

The Jr. Mechanical Engineering of Toys workshop introduces our youngest engineers to the fundamental concepts of energy, materials, and movement. Students will design and construct their own buzzer and toy popper! Children will get to take the mechanical toys built in the workshop home!

  • Date: October 2nd
  • Time: 6pm-8pm
  • This program is mainly geared towards ages 5 – 8.

Minecraft – Medieval Times

This workshop will introduce students to the many uses of Redstone through a Medieval themed adventure of creation, exploration, electrical circuits, and castle besieging. The kids will make mine cart tracks to help them gather resources, work together to build their kingdom, and design traps to defend their castle. The kids will learn the basics of movement, mining, building, crafting, and perhaps the most important of all, teamwork. The kids will work together to overcome obstacles, gather resources, and solve problems, all while learning the basics of Redstone.

  • Date: October 9th
  • Time: 6pm-8pm
  • This program is mainly geared towards ages 6 – 12.

Aerospace Engineering

During the Aerospace Engineering workshop, students will use the Engineering Design Process to design, create, test, and refine a variety of flying machines. They will plan and build a straw rocket to land in a target zone or fly the farthest distance, and design a foam airplane to travel the farthest distance. Students will learn the importance of aerodynamics and material selection as they use the engineering design process to create a world of fun!

  • Date: October 16th
  • Time: 6pm-8pm
  • This program is mainly geared towards ages 5- 12.

Mechanical Engineering

During the Mechanical Engineering workshop, students will use the Engineering Design Process to design, create, test, and improve a variety of machines and mechanical systems. Students learn basics of energy, traction, aerodynamics, and durability while constructing candy catapults, and designing Marble Run to understand the importance of speed and angle for mechanical devices to achieve the ideal rate of travel.

  • Date:October 23rd
  • Time: 6pm-8pm
  • This program is mainly geared towards ages 6- 12.

Robotics – Robo Games

What’s more fun than competing in wrestling match, a basketball game, or racing a friend to the finish line? Building and programming your robot to do these things! During the Robo Games Workshop, students design LEGO® MINDSTORM robots to compete in simulated games such as a sprinting in a race, and tug of war. Students use LEGO® motors, sensors, and computer software to learn principles of robotics, computer programming, and teamwork.

  • Date: October 30th
  • Time: 6pm-8pm
  • This program is mainly geared towards ages 7- 12.
